The Detroit Lions officially announced Monday that Jim Bob Cooter will be the quarterbacks coach on Jim Caldwell's staff.
Cooter, 29, a former back-up quarterback in college at Tennessee, was the Denver Broncos' QB coach last season. He previously was an offensive assistant under Caldwell for three years in Indianapolis.
The move, in essence, gives the Lions three quarterback coaches to work with Matthew Stafford, who will try to bounce back from a rough second half of the season in 2013.
Caldwell worked as an assistant coach in the past with QBs such as Peyton Manning in Indianapolis and Joe Flacco in Baltimore.
Offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi came from New Orleans, where he was Drew Brees' quarterback coach.
Nevertheless, Lombardi said last week during a news conference that he was in favor of adding a quarterbacks coach under him.
"I certainly would like one," Lombardi said. "There is a lot of work that goes into a coaching staff. If you can find a talented guy to come into that position, I think that's always helpful."
It's a similar situation to the Saints' staff that he worked with in recent years.
"Sean (coach Sean Payton) certainly knew a lot about coaching quarterbacks," Lombardi said. "Pete Carmichael (offensive coordinator) had been the quarterback coach before I became the quarterback coach. So, there were three voices there.
"I learned from Sean and Pete, and Pete had learned from Sean, so we all spoke the same language. There wasn't any pull. We're going to have the same situation here and I'm sure those relationships will evolve a little bit."
The addition of Cooter isn't completely without controversy, albeit from his past. In 2009, three years after a DUI arrest, he was charged with aggravated burglary after allegedly climbing through the window of a woman's apartment, stripping down to his underwear and getting into the woman's bed before she called police.
