LeSean McCoy left a 20 cent tip on a $61.56 tab at Philly burger joint
Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy, if the allegations made in a Philly Mag report prove accurate, has joined the considerable ranks of rich professional athletes whose name has become synonymous with being super-cheap, thanks to his alleged tipping habits at a Philadelphia burger joint.
McCoy, along with three companions, reportedly hit up PYT, a “popular burger-and-booze spot” in Philly on Monday.
While the restaurant denies that there were any complaints regarding the service provided to McCoy and his party, the running back, according to a photograph of his alleged VISA credit cardslip, left a supremely stingy tip on his tab.
Yep, that is a 20-cent tip on a $61.56 tab.
PYT owner Tommy Up told Philly Mag he has no doubts whatsoever that the LeSean McCoy who left the horrible tip was indeed the running back.
“They were not easy customers,” Up told Philly Mag.
PYT employee Rob Knelly, who was McCoy’s server on Monday, not only corroborated Rob’s claims, he added that the party was loud and rude.
“As soon as they sat down, they were pretty rude,” Knelly told NJ.com. “I asked some questions, they weren’t really responsive. They were cursing, making derogatory comments. I put their order in and forgot one of their appetizers, which I apologized for. They ordered things, and once they got it, said ‘We ain’t eating this (bleep)! We don’t want it.’ ”
NJ.com reached out to McCoy’s representatives, who told them that they currently are in the process of confirming the authenticity of the receipt and had no further comment.
McCoy didn’t have much to say Monday afternoon when asked about the alleged incident.
Tales of professional athletes, who are by default pretty wealthy, leaving alarmingly paltry tips have been commonplace for decades, if not longer. But the advent of camera phones and the like, paired with the ability to disseminate photographic evidence, has changed the game. The supposed violation by an athlete of the societal norms relating to what is considered an acceptable gratuity for services provided by waitstaff has increased dramatically the frequency of allegations that another sports superstar has stiffed yet another server.
On the other hand, in defense of McCoy, we have only heard one side of the story. Perhaps the quality of the service provided, along with the quality of the food served, had something to do with the terrible tip.
NFL analyst Warren Sapp insisted that the reason he left a server no tip during an outing at a Florida sports bar in July was because service was terrible and that she referred to Sapp and his party as “boys.”
Further, for every story about an athlete leaving a horrible tip there is another story about one leaving a great tip. Stories about regarding the generous tipping practices from the likes of Peyton Manning, Chad Ochocinco, and Bubba Watson, among others.
Still, a 20-cent tip sure does not look good on paper, that’s for sure. Perhaps McCoy will address his own personal “Gratuity-gate” during his next interaction with the media.
