An offseason of uncertainty for Florida State recruit Matthew Thomas appears to have come to a resolution.
The five-star linebacker from Miami reportedly will honor the letter of intent he signed with the Seminoles in February and report to Tallahassee on Saturday.
“After meeting with coach (Jimbo) Fisher and his staff and gathering all the information I have decided to honor my commitment to Florida State,” Thomas told Warchant.com. “I also want to be close to my family and I want be part of what they are building at Florida State. I'm looking forward to winning games at Florida State and building towards my future.”
Thomas had told the Miami Herald in May that he was trying to back out of his letter of intent and wanted to play at Southern California.
“I just didn’t make the decision I really wanted to on signing day,” Thomas told the Herald.
Thomas’ father, Billy, had told ESPN as recently as Monday that his son was still pursuing the chance to play at USC. But that quickly changed.
“I think sitting down with Jimbo Fisher made the difference,” Billy Thomas told ESPN on Wednesday. “Florida State never stopped recruiting him. They told him, ‘You're our guy.’ Jimbo never backed down. They told him they would build him into a great football player and student.”
