Lakers' rough year continues with draft lottery

The last time the Lakers had the No. 1 overall pick, they selected a forward by the name of James Worthy out of North Carolina in 1982.
The Lakers found themselves in the draft lottery for the first time in 2005, and percentages said they'd likely be awarded the sixth overall pick.
Despite having the worst record in franchise history, the chances of the Lakers having the No. 1 pick in the 2014 NBA Draft were slightly over six percent.
With that in mind, the organization sent Worthy to the Draft Lottery. He even had reinforcements with him in the form of two bobbleheads. One of the late, great Chick Hearn, the longtime voice of the team. The other of the late Dr. Jerry Buss, who guided the team to 10 NBA championships as owner.
As it turns out, No. 1 just wasn't in the cards for the Lakers. Neither was the top three. And neither was sixth as they dropped a spot and will have the No. 7 overall selection in the first round of the 2014 NBA Draft on June 26 in New York.

Names like Wiggins, Parker, Embiid and Exum are sure to be off the board when it's the Lakers' turn at No. 7, making this pick even more intriguing.
Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak has said a lot of what the team does going forward has to do with this pick, and the team was hoping to get a difference maker.
At No. 7, Kentucky forward Julius Randle could still be around as well as Arizona forward Aaron Gordon and Oklahoma State guard Marcus Smart.
In its latest mock draft, DraftExpress has the Lakers slated to take Indiana center Noah Vonleh with the No. 7 pick.
Vonleh is 6-9, 247 pounds with a wingspan of 7'4". He averaged 11.3 points and 9.0 rebounds per game while earning Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors last season.
Although a small sample size, he converted 48.5 percent of this three point attempts (16-for-33).
Of course, trading the pick is an option as well if the Lakers can find any takers.
