KU QB needs knee surgery after teammate's spring game hit

Kansas quarterback Michael Cummings needs surgery on his left knee after taking a hit from a teammate in Saturday's spring game, KU coach David Beaty announced on Monday.
There is no immediate timetable for Cummings' return. Heading into Saturday's game, Cummings was the Jayhawks' likely starting quarterback, ahead of UCLA transfer T.J. Millweard and Montell Cozart, who began last season as the starter before ceding duties to Cummings.
Cummings took the hit from junior safety Michael Glatczak while scrambling on a broken play and immediately clutched his knee. He was down for several minutes before being helped off the field.
Beaty called the hit a "complete freak accident."
"Michael Glatczak was being blocked down the field and had his back to the action for almost the entire play," Beaty said. "At the last second he turned to make the tackle without having any idea who was carrying the ball. He is a great kid, a great teammate and again it was just a very unfortunate accident."
Cummings, who will be a senior in 2015, threw for 1,715 yards, nine touchdowns and six interceptions last season and started the final seven games of the season. His 332 passing yards against TCU were the most for a KU quarterback since Todd Reesing in 2009.
