The off-field legend of Johnny Manziel continues to grow with allegations the Texas A&M star was kicked out of the Manning Passing Academy for partying too hard even as camp officials are adamant those reports are inaccurate.
When Manziel didn't participate in the "Air It Out" competition with the other hotshots Saturday night, reporters were told that the Heisman Trophy winner was sick and had left the camp. Later, a camp spokesman released the following statement:
"Johnny Manziel did participate in some activities in the 2013 Manning Passing Academy as a college counselor/coach," the statement said. "After missing and being late for practice assignments, Johnny explained that he had been feeling ill. Consequently, we agreed that it was in everyone's best interest for him to go home a day early."
The Manning Passing Academy, held at Nicholls State in Thibodaux, La., attracts many of the nation's top collegiate quarterbacks to serve as counselors to high school-age passers. It was Manziel's first appearance as a counselor after attending twice as a camper during his high school years.
Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning was appreciative of Manziel taking the time to attend the camp, and did mention his younger brother leaving early once as well during his time as a counselor.
"I enjoyed meeting Johnny," Peyton Manning said. "I can remember a 20-year-old Eli missing a meeting and catching some flak. We always have counselors who leave early. Johnny was great with the campers for the time he was here. He had to leave early. I wish him the best and I want him to come back as a counselor next year."
Photos on social media showed Manziel and Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron together at a local watering hole on Friday night. Archie and Eli Manning were also photographed sharing beverages with McCarron that night.
