Jockey Talamo rides 1,000th winner at Santa Anita

Jockey Joe Talamo rode his 1,000th career winner at Santa Anita on Thursday, then three races later he won the $61,138 Cloud Nine Purse aboard Let's Go Cheyenne.
She ran 1 1-8 miles on the turf in 1:46.08 to win by a length in the feature for fillies and mares. Let's Go Cheyenne paid $13.60, $5.80 and $4.20.
Caelis returned $3 and $2.40 as the 8-5 favorite, while Meltarib was another nose back in third and paid $4.40 to show.
The victory, worth $34,800, increased Let's Go Cheyenne's career earnings to $96,410, with two wins in seven starts.
In the fourth race, Talamo guided Splendid Fortune to a 7 1-4-length victory ahead of jockey Mike Smith, who was second in his pursuit of 5,000 winners. Smith remained at 4,997 after being shut out in four races Thursday.
Talamo said before the day's races that the 1,000-win milestone came up on him pretty quickly. The 22-year-old rider said he didn't know he was that close until his mother, Joy, told him two weeks ago.
Talamo is fourth in the jockeys' standings at Santa Anita with 41 winners. He's been winning at an 11-percent clip and his mounts have earned more than $2.2 million this year.
Rafael Bejarano rode three winners on the eight-race card.
