Minnesota head football coach Jerry Kill continues to work on his first recruiting class with the Golden Gophers as he announced the signing of David Cobb, a 5-foot-11, 205-pounder from Killeen (Texas) Ellison.
Cobb was rated as a three-star prospect by Rivals.com, Scout.com and ESPN/Scouts Inc and is expected to be defensive back for Minnesota.
Cobb earned All District 12-5A honors as a running back following this season as rushed for more than 1,400 yards and scored 17 touchdowns in 2010. Cobb ran for 2,946 yards and 35 scores in his career.
"David is a great get for us," head coach Jerry Kill said. "He's a three-year starter for Killeen Ellison. I know that program and that's hard to do there. He's also a two-year starter as the shooting guard on the basketball team. We really like David's athleticism and his character. He's got good size and thickness to him. Plus, he has good speed. He's a 10.7 guy in the 100. He could help us in a couple different areas."
ESPN/Scouts Inc. ranks Cobb as the No. 60 running back in the 2011 recruiting class, while Scout.com lists him at No. 98.
Cobb joins 23 other Gopher football recruits who have been announced over the last two weeks.
Kill is also working on the Class of 2012 for the Golden Gophers. He landed a commitment from 6-foot-3 junior wide receiver Andre McDonald from Minnetonka (Minn.) Hopkins, who attended the Minnesota Junior Day last week.
Sam Lee, a 6-foot-5, 300-pound lineman from Blue Earth (Minn,) High and Phil Nelson, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound quarterback from Mankato (MN) West, also attended the Junior Day.
Lee was named South Central Conference All-Conference team this year and is a teammate of Jonah Pirsig, who has already received a Minnesota scholarship offer.
