IRVING, Texas -- Stephen Jones says he sees no decline in his 70-year-old father's energy level. Entering his 25th season as owner of the Dallas Cowboys, Jerry is still moving at "1,000 miles an hour," said Stephen, the team's executive vice president, on Tuesday.
"I don't think the guy ever quits thinking and ever quits moving," Stephen said. "I think his energy level is as good, if not better, than I have ever seen it. He's more motivated and more pushing buttons than when I have ever seen him. Obviously, getting the Cowboys back to a situation where we can get in the playoffs, win playoff games and compete for championships are very important to him.
"He wants to hold everyone accountable, including himself. I think he has done a great job of that this offseason."
Jerry can change all the coaches and players he wants, but if the Cowboys miss the playoffs for a fourth consecutive season, he will receive the majority of the blame. The Cowboys haven't reached the Super Bowl since Jan. 28, 1996, they've won two playoff games since then and only one in the last 16 seasons.
According to Stephen, the criticism Jerry receives for the team's lack of recent postseason success is used to fuel his father's fire.
"Obviously he's special," Stephen said. "You don't run across many people like him that are driven to be successful, not only in business, but I think he's equally driven for the Cowboys to win championships. We've won them. He certainly doesn't want to think we're through winning them."
