On a 2010 episode of 60 Minutes, Jerry Jones said that if former New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner owned the Dallas Cowboys, he would have probably fired Jones as general manager.
During an interview that aired before Sunday's game on NBC, Bob Costas asked Jones if Jones the owner would have dismissed Jones the general manager by now with the 123-124 regular season record the Cowboys have had since 1997.
Jones' response: "I think so."
Jones tried to explain his statement after Sunday's game.
"What I really meant was, one of the things you do is if you've got a GM in this particular case that owns the team, you go in and work on the mirror," Jones said. "And I don't know if that came out on the interview but we talked about it quite a bit."
When further questioned on the topic, Jones referred to when he purchased the franchise in 1989.
"The night I bought it, I said I would be doing what I'm doing and that's GM the team and making the final decisions on personnel," he said. "That's the way it's always been done. We've won three Super Bowls doing it that way, so I'm going to do it again."
But he has also won only one playoff game in the last 15 years doing it that way.
"I think that I know how our organization runs and I know the best way to make decisions for us and that's the best way," he said. "And I know that's what motivates me as an owner and causes me to basically do the best job that I can."
