Jerry Jones: Cowboys getting 9 wins is 'wonderful'

For the first time since 2009, the Dallas Cowboys will post a winning season. And probably more relieving than that is the fact the club will escape posting a fourth consecutive 8-8 record.

How does Cowboys owner, president, and general manager Jerry Jones feel about breaking the 8-8 cycle?

"It's wonderful. And nine sounds fine," Jones said on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM].

Another fact remains that the Cowboys aren't out of the woods and into the postseason just yet. If the Lions, who host Tampa Bay, and Seahawks, who visit Philadelphia, win and improve to 9-4 each, the Cowboys are once again on the outside looking in due to the tiebreaking procedures for a three-team tie. In such an instance, the league looks to overall conference record. Seattle and Detroit would both be 7-2 as Dallas would be 6-4.

Jones understands this, and he and his staff have been examining the other NFC teams' schedules.

"More importantly than anything, you know we've all been sitting here looking at the schedules of the other teams and looking at the division," Jones said. "It's, for whatever reason, it's tough to break through. I think one of the reasons that we are having problems -- it seems like we've got a lid on it right as we get in the end is because the league has stacked all the conference games up, the division games up at the end."

The Cowboys owner anticipates some playoff-spot rivals losing three or four times down the stretch, which could give Dallas either a shot at winning the NFC East or securing a wildcard berth.

Since 2002, 30 of 33 teams that were 9-4 made the playoffs. The only teams that failed were the 2010 New York Giants, 2008 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and 2002 New Orleans Saints.
