Jerry Jones: Cowboys fielded trade offers while on the clock

Before selecting Notre Dame offensive tackle Zack Martin Thursday night, the Dallas Cowboys fielded calls about possible trade offers while they were on the clock.

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones initially said there weren't any firm offers, however, he changed his response later in the press conference.

"We spent a lot of time on possible trades back," Jones said. "We spent almost eight or nine minutes looking at that."

Following that answer, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones whispered into his father's ear while head coach Jason Garrett was answering a question. Jerry Jones then made sure to explain that Stephen was the one on the calls and he said there were, in fact, firm offers.

"By definition, you could count some offers that we had there as firm offers," Jerry said. "We obviously didn't take it or we would've made the trade."

In the end, the Cowboys weighed their options until the final minute. They ultimately decided that selecting Martin was a better option than what teams were offering.

Jerry also acknowledged that he was surprised there weren't better offers considering Johnny Manziel was still available at the time.

"I was surprised," Jerry responded when asked about Manziel still being available at No. 16. "But what I was even more surprised was the fact that he was there didn't bring on a bonanza of offers."
