Jason Garrett: Cowboys 'have an immense amount of confidence in Tony Romo'

IRVING – Jason Garrett said Monday that Tony Romo should’ve thrown to DeMarco Murray on his final passing attempt in Sunday’s 51-48 loss to the Denver Broncos.

The Dallas Cowboys quarterback threw further up field to tight end Gavin Escobar, who had three defenders surrounding him. The play resulted in an interception, which led to a game-winning Broncos field goal.

Despite the costly mistake, Garrett assured that he hasn’t lost confidence in the team’s starting quarterback.

"We have an immense amount of confidence in Tony Romo," Garrett said. "If you watched us play over the last six or seven years, I think anybody would recognize that. We think he’s an outstanding player. I think he showed that [Sunday]. Unfortunately it didn’t end up the way we wanted to for our football team.

"But you just have to keep throwing fastballs and keep going and Tony will certainly do that and our team will certainly do that."

Romo threw for a franchise-record 506 yards and five touchdowns, but his lone error came when everything was on the line. Some might think Romo’s penchant for critical mistakes in big moments would affect the team’s belief in its quarterback, but Garrett said that’s not the case.

"I don’t think there’s any question anybody who watched that football game believes that this guy is an outstanding player and he’s been an outstanding player for us," Garrett said. "Certainly in our building and everybody on our football team and everybody in our organization believes a great deal in him."

It would take some pretty thick skin to tune out all the criticism that Romo receives. After all, how do you not read something online or in print or hear something on the radio or TV?

Garrett smiled when asked how Romo tunes out the critics.

He then responded: "You don’t turn on the radio and you don’t turn on the TV. It’s as simple as that. You watch movies."
