Jaguars cut WR Mohamed Massaquoi, OL Jason Spitz

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Mohamed Massaquoi, the wide receiver who was one of the top free-agent acquisitions by the Jacksonville Jaguars during the offseason, was cut Monday after an unimpressive training camp and preseason.
With Justin Blackmon opening camp on the physically unable to perform list and facing a four-game suspension once the regular season begins, the 26-year-old Massaquoi was expected to compete for a starting receiver's job after signing a two-year, $1.7 million contract. Instead, the former member of the Cleveland Browns fell behind rookie Ace Sanders and previously little-used Mike Brown on the depth chart.
Massaquoi had only two catches for 15 yards in the preseason. Both came from Chad Henne in the Jaguars' loss Saturday night to the New York Jets after Blaine Gabbert had guided the first-string offense to a touchdown and a field goal.
Also released was guard/center Jason Spitz, who was in the last season of a three-year contract worth $5.25 million. Spitz missed all of the 2012 season with a broken foot. It was Spitz whose snap sailed over the head of backup quarterback Mike Kafka in the fourth quarter and was recovered in the end zone for a touchdown by the Jets.
The Jaguars' roster now stands at 88 players.
