COLUMBUS, OHIO - The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed forward Blake Comeau to a one-year contract extension through the 2013-14 National Hockey League season, club General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen announced today. As is club policy, terms were not disclosed. Comeau, 27, was acquired by the Blue Jackets on April 3, 2013 from the Calgary Flames in exchange for a fifth round pick in the 2013 NHL Draft. He tallied 6-6-12 and 20 penalty minutes in 42 games during the 2012-13 season, including 2-3-5, six penalty minutes and a +5 plus/minus rating in nine games with Columbus.
“Blake is a dependable two-way forward who combines physical play with ability in the offensive zone,” said Kekalainen. “We liked what we saw from him at the end of last season as he fit in very well with our team and we’re pleased to have signed him to this extension.” The 6-1, 205-pound forward has registered 67-81-148 in 361 career NHL games with the Blue Jackets, Flames and Islanders. He set career highs for goals, assists and points in a season with 24-22-46 and 43 penalty minutes in 77 games with the Islanders in 2010-11. A native of Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan, Comeau was New York’s second pick, 47th overall, of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. Prior to turning pro, he won a Memorial Cup championship with the Western Hockey League’s Kelowna Rockets in 2004 and captured gold with Team Canada at the 2006 IIHF World Junior Championships.
