'I've Been a Blessed Person'

Chuck Amato wants the proprietors of his favorite Italian restaurants
in Raleigh to know that he reached a milestone last
week.
After weeks of subsisting on a liquid diet,
he's back to eating solid food now as he recovers in Tallahassee, Fla.,
from treatment for throat and neck cancer. He had his first plate of
spaghetti Friday.
"Without a doubt, I've been a
blessed person," Amato said by telephone from his home Tuesday
afternoon. "I said that when I got the N.C. State head job. ... When
you throw all of them into it, the different type of cancers there are,
I was very, very fortunate to have a cancer that was very correctable
and had a high rate of curing."
Amato, 63, learned
April 15 that his treatment was successful. The former N.C. State
football player and wrestler, who was the Wolfpack's head coach from
2000-06, is home in Tallahassee now, regaining his strength and hoping
to return to coaching.
