INDIANAPOLIS -- At approximately 9 a.m., the competition could be declared closed for fastest quarterback at this year’s NFL Scouting Combine.

Robert Griffin III, the 2011 Heisman Trophy winner from Baylor, blistered the 40-yard dash in 4.38 seconds and 4.41 in his two attempts.

Griffin was an outstanding hurdler in high school and ran track as a freshman at Baylor, so it was no surprise that he posted fast times in the 40.

But Griffin’s time was more than fast. It was super-fast, especially for an athlete who weighed in at 223 pounds at the combine.

By comparison, Cam Newton was timed in 4.56 and 4.59 seconds in his two attempts last year. Newton, who weighs 250 pounds, was drafted first overall by Carolina last April.

The best 40-yard dash in recent times was posted by Titans running back Chris Johnson -- 4.24 seconds in 2008.
