On August 6 and 7, eight prestigious clubs from across Europe
and the United States will call South Florida home for two days as they
compete for the coveted International Champions Cup Trophy. In the last of an eight-part series, we take a look at the LA Galaxy.
Based in Los Angeles, the Galaxy are the most well-known and successful team in Major League Soccer. LA has won four MLS Cup titles, one CONCACAF Champions Cup Title and two US Open Cup titles, most recently having won the past two MLS titles. Their four MLS Cup titles ties them for the most in Major League Soccer history with D.C. United.
The LA Galaxy has many familiar faces, but are led by captain Robbie Kean and vice-captain Landon Donovan.
Robbie Kean, a native of Ireland came over to the LA Galaxy in 2011 after playing his entire professional career in Europe. Keane spent a majority of his career with the Tottenham Hotspurs, where he led them to a League Cup during the 2007-2008 season. The striker has helped the LA Galaxy to their last two MLS Cup titles.
American Landon Donovan has been with the LA Galaxy since the 2005 season. During that time, he has also spent time on loan to German Club Bayern Munich and Everton, whom the Galaxy may face during the International Champions Cup. During his time with the Galaxy Donovan has won three MLS Cup, and won two more MLS Cups with the San Jose Earthquakes earlier in his career.
Donovan has also seen a very successful career with the United States National Team, having won the CONCACAF Gold Cup four times and the FIFA Confederations Cup once. During the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup, Donovan became the first US player to score 50 international career goals and have 50 international career assists.
Other standouts for the LA Galaxy include Omar Gonzalez, Carlo Cudicini, and Robbie Rogers.
Bruce Arena, the manager of the LA Galaxy has been with the team since 2008 and has led the team to the last two MLS cups. Prior to his time with the LA Galaxy, Arena also won two MLS Cups with the D.C. United, and also led the United States Men’s National team to two CONCACAF Gold Cup titles. During the course of his MLS career, he has been named the MLS Coach of the Year on three different occasions.
Furthermore, the LA Galaxy are well known internationally for the signing of David Beckham in 2007, who retired this past season after their last MLS Cup victory.
The LA Galaxy will open up the International Champions Cup against Real Madrid in the University of Phoenix Stadium in Arizona, before facing either Everton or Juventus in the first soccer games to ever be played at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles.
