It's been a case of one step forward, two steps back for Tigers second baseman Omar Infante.

Infante, who has been on the 15-day disabled list since July 9, retroactive to July 4, was injured in Toronto when Colby Rasmus slid into his left ankle at second base.

The Tigers originally hoped Infante would be ready after the All-Star break but his ankle did not progress as they had hoped.

Infante went on a rehabilitation assignment with the West Michigan Whitecaps July 24-25 but tweaked the ankle after reaching first base on a single.

Infante joined the Toledo Mud Hens Tuesday in Columbus and was the designated hitter.

Infante was supposed to play second base for the Mud Hens Wednesday but was scratched before the game due to soreness in his left ankle, according to what reporters were told in Cleveland.

Ramon Santiago and rookie Hernan Perez will continue to play second base until Infante is able to return.
