Indians make pair of pitching moves

CLEVELAND, OH - The Cleveland Indians announced today that the club has selected the contract of RHP Matt Langwell from Triple-A Columbus and optioned LHP Scott Barnes to Columbus.

Langwell, 27, has made 19 relief appearances and one spot start for Columbus this season, going 2-1 with a 2.30 ERA (7 ER/27.1 IP) and one save. He has held opponents to a .243 (25-103) avg., including a .186 clip (11-59) against right-handers, while averaging 7.6 strikeouts-per-9.0 IP (23 SO/12 BB). Langwell, who will be seeking to make his Major League debut, was originally selected by Cleveland in the 11th round of the 2008 June draft. Barnes, 25, worked 1.0 inning of relief in Friday’s game against Tampa Bay and has made 7 appearances for Cleveland this season (0-1, 7.27 ERA, 8.2 IP, 8 H, 7 R-ER, 3 BB, 10 SO). The left-hander has also gone 2-2 with a 5.74 ERA (15.2 IP, 14 H, 10 R-ER, 8 BB, 19 SO) in 12 relief outings for Columbus. With Langwell’s addition, the Indians have 40 players on the club’s 40-man roster.
