Indians make Gomes extension official

OAKLAND -- With a couple hours until the Indians attempt to open the 2014 season against the Athletics, the team has made official the extension with catcher Yan Gomes.
Gomes has a six-year extension worth $23 million with a club option for 2020 and 2021. Gomes established himself as the everyday catcher the second half of last season, batting .294 with 18 doubles, 11 home runs and 38 RBI in 88 games with 79 starts at catcher.
Gomes, who was acquired from Toronto along with Mike Aviles in a Nov. 3, 2012, trade with Toronto. He threw out 18 of 47 runners who attempted to steal off him. The 38.3 percentage would have led the American League if he had more appearances.
With the Gomes signing, the Tribe have most of their key players under team control through 2016.
