SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) Runners competing in marathon and half marathon races last weekend in South Bend, Indiana, ran a little further than they intended.
Beacon Health System spokeswoman Heidi Prescott tells the South Bend Tribune (http://bit.ly/1svyg98 ) that the competitors ran about 0.38 of a mile too far between miles 10 and 11 because of miscommunication between the race organizers and the group certifying the race distance.
The mistake affected about 1,700 registered participants in the Sunburst races Saturday.
Participants largely learned of the discrepancy when their personal GPS units indicated they had run further than the 13.1-mile distance for a half marathon and 26.2 miles for the full marathon.
