India dismissed New Zealand for 204 on the third morning of the second test and then survived five overs to reach lunch at 12-0 on Sunday with an overall lead of 124 runs.
Mohammed Shami (3-70) and Ravi Ashwin (1-33) wrapped up the tailenders after Jeetan Patel (47) and B.J. Watling (25) put on 60 runs for the eighth wicket after New Zealand resumed at 128-7.
Ashwin got the first breakthrough, when Patel skied a catch to Shami at mid-off after a run-a-ball innings containing nine boundaries.
Shami trapped Watling and Neil Wagner (10) lbw in the 51st and 53rd overs, giving India a 112-run first-innings advantage.
Shikhar Dhawan (4) and Murali Vijay (7) were unbeaten at the interval. Dhawan weathered a good working over by Trent Boult (0-3), who bowled quick and short.
