KANPUR, India (AP) India closed in on victory by reducing New Zealand to 205-7 at lunch on Monday; the final day of the first test.

Chasing an improbable 434, the visitors realistically can only hope to salvage a draw, with Mitchell Santner (57) and Ish Sodhi (2) the not out batsmen.

Luke Ronchi (80) put on 102 runs for the fifth wicket with Santner. The duo doggedly defied India's bowlers for over an hour and playing some handsome shots. Ronchi scored his second test fifty, including nine fours and a six.

He was caught at point off Ravindra Jadeja after the drinks break but Santner reached his maiden test fifty before lunch.
