After a rough August, the Tampa Bay Rays hope some rest and recovery
does Jeremy Hellickson well. The right-hander was sent to Class A
Charlotte on Tuesday, a day after he allowed five runs and seven hits in
only 2 2/3 innings in a loss to the Kansas City Royals. Rays manager
Joe Maddon emphasized that Hellickson is well physically but giving the
26-year-old a break would be beneficial. Read More

Jose Molina had three hits and three RBIs but the Angles rally for four
runs late - including two in the ninth off Fernando Rodney - as the
Rays fall 6-5. Read More

* Christian Yelich hit a solo home run for the Marlins, which managed just four hits in a 2-1 loss to Washington. Read More

* With Blaine Gabbert sidelined because of a broken thumb, the Jacksonville Jaguars have added quarterback Ricky Stanzi. The Jaguars were awarded Stanzi and linebacker Kyle Knox off waivers Tuesday. The team waived running back De'Leon Eskridge and tight end Isaiah Stanback to make room on the 75-man roster. Read More

* Jeff Driskel, the Florida quarterback who had a slew of highlights as a runner last season -- some working from the zone-read option, others on scrambles from the pocket -- in finishing as the team's second-leading rusher with 413 yards and four touchdowns. But Driskel, the junior from Oviedo, Fla., has heard from Coach Will Muschamp and offensive coordinator Brent Pease about being smart when he takes off with the ball. Read More

* Darrelle Revis appears on track to play Week 1 against his former team. On Tuesday, Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano said there have been no setbacks with the four-time Pro Bowl cornerback and that Revis remains a day-to-day case as the days draw closer to the Sept. 8 opener at the New York Jets.  Read More

* Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano said two-time Pro Bowl guard Carl Nicks is making progress with the infected blister on the player's left foot. Schiano said Nicks has responded well to treatment, though a timetable for a return is unknown. Read More

* The Miami Dolphins terminated the contract of veteran guard Lance Louis on Tuesday afternoon, and they also waived fullback Jorvorskie Lane and seven others to cut the roster down to 75. Read More

* Dolphins players know that their final chance to make an impression will come on Thursday when the team takes on the Saints in the preseason finale. The game could help determine roster spots and position battles heading into the 2013 season. Read More

* Miami Dolphins first-round draft pick Dion Jordan returned to practice in full pads Tuesday after having been limited since the second preseason game due to a shoulder injury. Coach Joe Philbin said he's not sure if or how much Jordan will play in the Dolphins' preseason finale on Thursday. Read More

* A countdown is on to the NFL's final-cut deadline, which is 6 p.m. Saturday. Rosters will be down to 75 players by 4 p.m. Tuesday, but there is still much to be determined before the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' 53-man roster comes into focus. Who are the bubble players to watch? * The Tampa Bay Buccaneers trimmed their roster to 75 players, waiving six players and releasing another to reach the total required by 4 p.m. Tuesday. Among those waived include linebacker Jacob Cutrera, who joined the Bucs before the 2011 season and played eight games in each of the past two campaigns. Read More

* Cecil Shorts III knows it wasn't long ago when he faced a situation with the Jacksonville Jaguars similar to the one which players such as Brett Brackett and Allen Reisner find themselves in now. Fifty-five catches for 979 yards later, the memory of Shorts having to battle for a roster spot after being a fourth-round draft pick in 2011 seems to have faded. But he can vouch for how heavily the air of uncertainty hangs over anyone perceived as being on the bubble. Read More

* While it is generally believed the Dolphins weren't willing to pay the left tackle as a free agent an amount similar to the four-year, $36 million deal he got last March from St. Louis, Long said the Dolphins had little chance of signing him after his first day of having visited the Rams. While he confirmed Miami offered him a contract, he wouldn't disclose the amount. Read More
