'I DON'T LIKE CARS': BRIAN VICKERS THROWS US A CURVEBALL

Brian Vickers is one of the most interesting and eclectic drivers in all of NASCAR. Among his many adventures, he has parachuted into the infield of Daytona International Speedway, scuba dived, flown a World War II-era Red Bull seaplane and raced sports cars everywhere from Abu Dhabi to Le Mans to Asia.

At Daytona this week, the 29-year-old racer made a shocking revelation: He doesn’t own a car.

That’s odd, given that he lives in Miami, a town not exactly known for cutting edge public transportation, and that manufacturers — Vickers races a Toyota — are only too happy to provide their star drivers with cars.

“I don’t like cars and I really don’t have a need for one right now,” said Vickers, who at age 20 in 2003 became the youngest NASCAR Nationwide Series champion in history.

Vickers admitted he sometimes drives while on the road during the long NASCAR season, but said, “If I had my choice, I’d much rather ride. Typically, it works out great, because my girlfriend actually loves to drive — loves to drive — loves cars. And I’m like, ‘Absolutely. Awesome. Have at it.’”

Vickers is set to drive in Saturday’s Nationwide race at Daytona.
