CORAL GABLES, Fla -- A daunting Atlantic Coast Conference schedule requires fearlessness and poise, attributes often associated with beloved superheroes.

University of Miami students, encouraged by the school to do so, dressed up as their favorites for Wednesday night's showdown against rival Florida State at BankUnited Center.

Sebastian the Ibis led cheers in a Superman costume. Two girls donned orange and green capes with No. 15 on the back in honor of senior guard Rion Brown. A group of friends dressed up as the Justice League and Buzz Lightyear.

A record 1,706 students showed up, and the first 500 received a special UM-themed superhero T-shirt. Those in the student section also were given Band-Aids to wear on their face for Brown, who got cut near his left eye during the Hurricanes' 63-57 victory last Wednesday at North Carolina.

Miami (9-6, 1-2) is the ACC's reigning regular-season and tournament champion.
