A Pennsylvania high school football player could face criminal charges after beating a player with his own helmet during a game last Friday night.
According to NBC affiliate WGAL, South Annville Township police are investigating Joey Cominsky, a senior quarterback and safety at Hamburg High School. In the video below, Cominsky can be seen ripping the helmet off of Annville-Cleona High School lineman Josh Hartmann during an on-field scrap between the teams:
“The Hamburg kid kinda flipped out and took the scrum to a completely different level,” Annville-Cleona coach Terry Lehman told PennLive.com. “Our kid is OK. He was able to go back into the game, but he has a cut on his head.”
Annville-Cleona athletic director Tommy Long confirmed the investigation to PennLive.com but wouldn't provide further details. “It’s always disappointing when you see something like this,” he said. “You certainly don’t want to see a situation like this within the lines of a game — football, basketball, wrestling, whatever.”
Cominsky and an Annville-Cleona player, Taylor Prentice, were ejected for their roles in the fracas, and both will be suspended for their team’s next game as a result. But the trouble may just be getting started for Cominsky, who could still face punishment from the school district and the police.
"It will be a very lengthy process, I can tell you that," South Annville Township police chief Ben Sutcliffe told PennLive.com. "It is premature at this point to say anything about charges being filed or not being filed."
