How about a $1,000 mint julep to quench that Kentucky Derby thirst?

Mint juleps have been the Kentucky Derby's beverage of choice for nearly a century, with a reported 120,000 of the bourbon-mint cocktails consumed over a Kentucky Derby weekend.
Usually a Churchill Downs souvenir cup of the brew will set you back $10 ($11 on Derby weekend). But local distillery Woodford Reserve has gussied up the Kentucky Derby beverage of choice, offering limited edition silver and gold mint julep cups for a gulp-worthy asking price of $1,000 to $2,000.
It's all part of the small batch bourbon distillery's $1,000 Mint Julep Cup program, which Woodford says has raised nearly $400,000 for charities over the past nine years.

The official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby is selling 89 commemorative cups in honor of the 89th anniversary of the Kentucky Derby's designation as the "Run for the Roses" -- 79 $1,000 Kentucky Rose silver cups and 10 $2,000 Royal Rose gold.
All will come complete with a gold medallion and a gold-plated sipping straw, and the mint juleps (assuming they are included in the price) come with a sprinkling of gold flakes. The limited edition goblets have been on sale since April 14, and the Royal Rose cups have already sold out, according to the distiller's website.

Proceeds from this year's sale benefit the Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement Center.
