PALLEKELE, Sri Lanka (AP) Fast bowler Josh Hazlewood led the way as Australia's bowlers ripped through Sri Lanka's top order in the first session of the series, leaving the hosts reeling at 84-5 at lunch on Tuesday.

Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews opted to bat first after winning the toss but seamer Mitchell Starc trapped opener Dimuth Karunaratne (5) lbw in the fifth to give Australian the early momentum.

Hazlewood (21-3) had No. 3 Kusal Mendis out lbw and Kaushal Silva (4) caught by Adam Voges as Sri Lanka was slipped to 19-3, then returned to have Dinesh Chandimal (15) caught behind by Peter Nevill to end a 24-run stand with Dhananjaya de Silva, who was unbeaten on 24 in his first test innings.

Left-arm spinner Steve O'Keefe had Mathews (15) caught by Australia captain Steve Smith at slip.
