Hawks guard John Jenkins' sophomore season barely got off the ground, if at all, before he was sidelined with a lower back injury after just 13 games. On Monday, a team announcement officially concluded the campaign: Jenkins underwent successful surgery on his lower back Monday morning and will miss the remainder of the season for rehabilitation and rest.
The procedure was performed by Dr. Hal Silcox of the Peachtree Orthopaedic Clinic in Atlanta.
Hampered by the back injury, which he suffered during the summer, the 6-foot-4 shooter's numbers fell off while playing just 12.2 minutes per outing in 13 games. He averaged 3.1 points and 1.7 rebounds in those games.
Jenkins becomes the second significant contributor on Atlanta's roster to be sidelined with a season-ending surgery over the past two months: forward Al Horford, the team's leading scorer and rebounder at the time of his injury, had a torn right pectoral muscle repaired on Dec. 31.
