ARLINGTON, Texas –€“ The Texas Rangers made the trade for outfielder Josh Hamilton official Monday, acquiring the former American League most valuable player from Los Angeles.

The deal is for cash considerations or a player to be named later.

According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram the Rangers will pay Hamilton between $2 and $3 million each year for the next three years with the Angels picking up the remainder of the $83 million left on his deal.

The club will have a press conference today at 3:30. Hamilton will head to the team's spring training complex in Surprise, Ariz., before he's expected to being a rehab assignment for Triple A Round Rock. Hamilton is recovering from offseason surgery on his right shoulder.

Hamilton, 33, struggled in his two seasons after signing with the Angels following the 2012 season.

He played in 151 games in 2013 but batted just .250 with 21 home runs and 79 RBI. That was a monster season compared to 2014 though when Hamilton was limited to 89 games and had just 10 home runs and 44 RBI.

But it was a substance-abuse relapse this offseason and Major League Baseball's decision not to suspend Hamilton that was impetus for the Angels wanting to rid themselves of Hamilton.

Hamilton was a key figure in the back-to-back World Series trips for the Rangers in 2010 and 2011. He was the American League Most Valuable Player in 2010 and was an All-Star in each of his five seasons.
