Grevers, Small, Smith reach finals at trials

OMAHA, Neb. -- Matt Grevers, Adam Small and Giles Smith all placed in the top eight in their respective events Saturday to qualify for the finals at the Olympic trials.
Grevers and Small posted seventh- and eighth-place finishes in the 50 free, while Smith finished eighth in the 100 fly. All three will compete in finals Sunday night.
"A majority of our night tonight was a setup for tomorrow night," Arizona head coach Eric Hansen said. "Adam, Matt and Giles making it into the finals is big for us."
Amanda Beard also had a successful night after finishing fifth in the 200 breast in a time of 2:26.42, and incoming Arizona freshman Bonnie Brandon placed fourth in the women’s 200 back to qualify for Sunday night's finals.
"Bonnie Brandon gave us a nice addition to what we are going to have next year," Hansen said. "And I’m really proud of Amanda’s fifth-place finish. She fought hard and gave it everything she had, and she can feel good about what she accomplished at this meet."
The trials will continue Sunday with the women’s 50 free preliminary and semifinal rounds as well as finals in the women’s 200 back, men’s 100 butterfly, women’s 800 free and men’s 50 free.
