Grapefruit League game roundup: March 3

Recaps from March 3 action in the Grapefruit League.
SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) -- Matt Wieters homered and drove in five runs, Conor Jackson connected twice and the Baltimore Orioles beat a Philadelphia Phillies split squad 12-3 on Sunday.
Wieters hit a three-run shot and Jackson followed with his first homer off Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick in the first inning.
Baltimore scored seven runs in the fifth on a two-run double by Wieters, a three-run homer by Jackson and a two-run drive by non-roster outfielder Jason Pridie.
Kendrick allowed four runs and four hits in two innings.
Chris Tillman started for the Orioles and allowed Michael Young's two-run homer. He pitched 2 2-3 innings.
In his first appearance of the spring, Miguel Gonzalez tossed two scoreless innings for Baltimore.
CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) -- Ryan Howard hit a go-ahead, three-run homer off Brett Cecil that cleared the back fence and went out of Bright House Field, helping a Philadelphia Phillies' split squad beat the Toronto Blue Jays 13-5 Sunday.
Howard's fifth-inning drive put the Phillies ahead 6-4. After missing spring training and the first half of last season while recovering from a torn left Achilles tendon, Howard is hitting .417 (10 for 24) with three homers, three doubles and 10 RBIs in nine exhibition games.
Domonic Brown also hit his third spring training homer, a solo shot in the fourth off left-hander Aaron Loup.
Jose Bautista and Mark DeRosa homered for the Blue Jays. Bautista, who played in just six games after the All-Star break last year due to a wrist injury, has two home runs in six games during the exhibition season.
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (AP) -- David Price struck out five in three shutout innings and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Minnesota Twins 7-2 on Sunday.
Rays designated hitter Luke Scott exited the game after one at-bat because of tightness in his left hamstring. He is day to day.
Kelly Johnson doubled in two runs and Chris Gimenez hit a two-run homer for Tampa Bay. Price, last year's AL Cy Young Award winner, allowed one hit.
Twins newcomer Mike Pelfrey also made an effective start, tossing three shutout innings. Coming off Tommy John surgery and competing for a spot in the rotation, the former Mets right-hander yielded one hit and walked one to rebound from a shaky outing in his spring debut.
Trevor Plouffe had two hits and an RBI for Minnesota.
KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) -- B.J. Upton hit his first home run in an Atlanta Braves' uniform, a two-run drive off Doug Fister in the fourth inning Sunday of a 6-1 win over the Detroit Tigers.
Upton, who like brother Justin joined the Braves during the offseason, is batting .368 (7 for 19) in the exhibition season. Justin Upton had an RBI double in the fifth against Bruce Rondon.
Tyler Pastornicky and Dan Uggla also homered for Atlanta, and the Braves' Joey Terdoslavich went 1 for 2 to raise his batting average to .625 (10 for 16).
Braves starter Mike Minor allowed one hit in three scoreless innings, combining with six relievers on a three-hitter.
Tigers starter Max Scherzer, slowed by a sore right shoulder at the end of last season, breezed through two hitless innings in 14 pitches and retired six straight batters.
FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) -- With Brett Gardner the only regular in the Yankees' starting lineup, New York beat the Boston Red Sox 5-2 Sunday in a game likely to be very different from the teams' opening-day matchup on April 1.
Boston's Mike Napoli, in just his second spring training game after being diagnosed with avascular necrosis during the offseason, homered off Adam Warren leading off the second.
Red Sox starter Ryan Dempster threw 25 of 28 pitches for strikes, allowing his only hit in three scoreless innings when Gardner reached on a single to shortstop starting the game.
Warren gave up one run and three hits in three innings.
New York took a 3-1 lead in the sixth off new Boston closer Joel Hanrahan, who allowed Eduardo Nunez's run-scoring single and Jayson Nix's RBI grounder. Another run scored on a fielding error by third baseman Drew Sutton.
Winner Jose Ramirez allowed three hits in three scoreless innings.
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) -- Dillon Gee threw three scoreless innings for the Mets in his first start since having a blood clot removed from an artery in his pitching shoulder, but New York was beaten by the Miami Marlins 6-4 Sunday.
Gee gave up three hits, a walk and struck out one in his first start since July 7. The right-hander's only previous outing this spring was two innings in relief against the University of Michigan on Feb. 24.
Mets catcher John Buck hit a three-run homer against his former team.
Miami starter Nathan Eovaldi was charged with three runs and two hits in 2 2-3 innings. He struck out four and retired his first seven batters before giving up a home run to Brandon Hicks.
Marlins shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria hit a two-run double.
VIERA, Fla. (AP) -- Ryan Zimmerman went 1 for 3 with an RBI single in his first spring training game following shoulder surgery, helping the Washington Nationals defeat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-6 Sunday.
Zimmerman had arthrosopic surgery on his right shoulder on Oct. 25. An All-Star in 2009, Zimmerman hit .282 with 25 homers and 95 RBIs for NL East champions last season despite the injured shoulder, which needed cortisone shots in June and September.
He was the designated hitter against the Cardinals rather than playing his usual third base.
Washington starter Ross Detwiler gave up one run and four hits in two scoreless innings and struck out four in his last appearance before joining the U.S. for the World Baseball Classic.
Chad Tracy hit a two-run homer and a double for Washington, and Zach Walters had a game-ending single off Eduardo Sanchez in the ninth.
Shane Robinson homered for St. Louis, and Pete Kozma had three hits.
BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) -- Jose Tabata made strides toward regaining his starting right fielder's job, keying a five-run second inning Sunday with a two-run double and helping the Pittsburgh Pirates build a big lead before holding on for an 8-6 victory over the Houston Astros.
Tabata lost his starting job last season when he hit just .243 with three home runs in 103 games. He is competing with Travis Snider and Jerry Sands for a lineup spot this spring.
John Ely, acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in an offseason trade, started for Houston and was tagged for five runs -- three earned -- in 1 2-3 innings.
Brett Wallace hit a three-run double for Houston, which had won three straight. Pittsburgh ended a six-game skid.
