KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) -- Justin Upton hit one of the longest home runs ever seen at Atlanta's spring training complex, a towering drive that cleared the grass berm beyond left field, as the Braves defeated the Miami Marlins 7-6 Monday.
Upton's teammates estimated the homer went at least 450 feet. It was his first hit of spring since joining the Braves in a blockbuster trade with Arizona.
The Marlins led 1-0 when Jason Heyward opened the fourth with a drive over the right-field wall. Upton made it back-to-back homers off loser Scott Maine, and brother B.J. Upton chipped in with a double, coming around to score on a stolen base and wild pitch.
Atlanta extended the lead to 7-1 before Miami put together a five-run eighth. Anthony Varvaro worked the ninth for a save.
CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) -- Cliff Lee looked sharp in his spring debut for Philadelphia and Miguel Cabrera homered again for the Detroit Tigers in a 10-1 win Monday over the Phillies.
Lee pitched two hitless innings and struck out his final two batters. The former Cy Young Award winner had only one blemish, a walk to Cabrera.
Cabrera, the reigning American League MVP and Triple Crown winner, launched a booming, three-run homer off closer Jonathan Papelbon in a six-run fifth inning. It was Cabrera's second home run this spring.
Papelbon struggled in his first action of the spring. The five-time All-Star faced nine batters in the fifth inning and retired just two before being pulled. Nick Castellanos also homered off Papelbon.
DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) -- NL Cy Young Award winner R.A. Dickey gave up two runs and four hits in his Toronto spring training debut, but he was outpitched by fellow knuckleballer Steven Wright for two innings in the Boston Red Sox split squad's 4-2 victory over the Blue Jays on Monday.
Wright, a minor leaguer, gave up two hits and struck out three over two scoreless innings. Former Red Sox knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, who is working with Wright, was at the game.
Red Sox manager John Farrell, who moved from Toronto to Boston during the offseason after managing the Blue Jays in 2011 and `12, was roundly booed by fans when his name was announced during the pregame starting lineup introductions. This was the first time Farrell has faced his former team.
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (AP) -- Jamey Wright's bid to make the Tampa Bay Rays his 10th major league team began with a scoreless inning.
The 38-year-old right-hander retired the only three batters he faced during Monday's 6-3 victory over a Boston split squad. He struck out Dustin Pedroia and Shane Victorino, then escaped without allowing a hit when third baseman Ryan Roberts made a diving stop on Jonny Gomes' hard grounder and scrambled to his feet to throw to first to end the third inning.
Pedroia homered in the first off Rays starter Alex Cobb. Newly-acquired Mike Carp had a RBI double in his debut for the Red Sox.
Alfredo Aceves started and worked two innings for Boston, allowing a two-run double to Yunel Escobar. Roberts also had a two-run double for the Rays.
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) -- Matt Holliday and Allen Craig each hit their first homers of spring training, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 10-2 victory over the Houston Astros on Monday.
Craig was starting as the designated hitter because he has had a sore shoulder the past few days and has yet to play in the field. He reached base in all three at-bats, adding a walk and an RBI single in the fourth.
Adam Wainwright, the Cardinals' likely opening-day starter, allowed four hits while striking out three in 2 2-3 scoreless innings.
Phil Humber needed only eight pitches to retire the Cardinals in the first inninng, but he struggled with his control in the second. Humber walked the first two batters then allowed a RBI hit to David Freese.
FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) -- Justin Morneau hit a three-run double for Minnesota and newcomer Vance Worley pitched two scoreless innings in his spring debut for the Twins in a 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday.
Worley was acquired in a trade with Philadelphia for outfielder Ben Revere. The right-hander gave up two hits and struck out one, far better than his previous start at Hammond Stadium when he was pitching for the Phillies last March. Worley gave up 11 runs in an exhibition game, including a two-run homer to Morneau.
Kyle McPherson, in contention for the fifth spot in Pittsburgh's rotation, needed just 12 pitches to finish his two innings. The right-hander gave up one hit.
SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) -- Brian Roberts and Nick Markakis each had two hits and Brian Matusz pitched two scoreless innings as the Baltimore Orioles won their third straight game, 5-1 over the New York Yankees on Monday.
Roberts and Markakis, the two most senior Orioles, were injured and missed the team's first postseason appearance in 15 years. Matusz, who was reinvented as a left-handed reliever last August, started and allowed two hits to a Yankees lineup that featured only two regulars -- center fielder Brett Gardner and catcher Francisco Cervelli.
Gardner had three hits for New York, which lost Curtis Granderson on Sunday for 10 weeks with a broken right forearm.
Left fielder Nate McLouth drove in two runs for Baltimore.
