PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) -- Dillon Gee allowed one run in two innings in his first outing since having a blood clot removed from an artery in his throwing shoulder, helping a New York Mets split squad beat the University of Michigan 5-2 in an exhibition game at Tradition Field on Sunday.
Gee struck out three in his first outing since July 7.
Jonathon Niese started for the Mets against owner Fred Wilpon's alma mater. He allowed one run in two innings and struck out two. He also threw two wild pitches in the first inning, the second of which allowed a run.
Marlon Bryd had a run-scoring single in the second inning. Mets second base prospect Wilmer Flores led off the bottom of the sixth with a home run to left field.
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) -- Jon Lester pitched two scoreless innings in his first start of spring training, leading the Boston Red Sox to a 5-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday.
Lester retired all six batters he faced, striking out one. He needed 24 pitches -- 17 strikes -- to get through the two innings, six in the second inning. All but one of Lester's pitches were fastballs.
Rafael Furcal was the designated hitter for St. Louis. He went 0 for 2 as he is working to return from a strained ligament in his throwing elbow that cut short his season. He recently received a cortisone shot in that elbow to help with a painful bone spur.
Daniel Descalso homered to right in the fifth inning for the Cardinals.
DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) -- Mark Buehrle was tagged for a two-run homer in his Toronto debut, and the Baltimore Orioles beat a Blue Jays split squad 5-4 on Sunday.
Buehrle allowed two runs and four hits over 1 1-3 innings in his first outing since the Miami Marlins sent him to Toronto as part of a blockbuster trade that also included Jose Reyes and Josh Johnson. The left-hander retired his first four batters before Lew Ford singled and Steve Pearce homered.
After singles by Danny Valencia and Taylor Teagarden, Buehrle was yanked.
Jair Jurrjens, signed by the Orioles to a minor league contract, allowed one run and two hits in two innings.
Jose Bautista hit a two-run homer for Toronto off Troy Patton. Reyes was 1 for 2 in his Blue Jays debut.
BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) -- Clint Barmes went 2 for 2 with a two-run homer and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Atlanta Braves 9-2 on Sunday.
Non-roster invitee Brad Hawpe added a two-run single for the Pirates. James McDonald, trying to bounce back from a dreadful second half of the 2012 season, pitched two scoreless innings for Pittsburgh.
Jason Heyward hit a solo home run for the Braves. Julio Teheran struck out two in two innings but Atlanta fell to 0-3 in Grapefruit League play after the Pirates had their way with the Braves' relievers.
Barmes is trying to bounce back from a miserable season at the plate in which he hit just .229 and struggled at the bottom of Pittsburgh's lineup. He singled in his first at-bat and then lined a shot into the left-field stands off Jonny Venters.
KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) -- Matt Harvey worked two innings in his spring debut for New York, giving up two hits including a home run to former Mets outfielder Fernando Martinez, and the Houston Astros scored late in a 7-7 tie Sunday.
Houston starter Bud Norris also pitched two innings, giving up a home run to Jamie Hoffman.
George Springer drove in the tying run in the ninth but the game was called because the Mets' split squad ran out of pitchers. Much of their team remained in Port St. Lucie to play the University of Michigan.
Jordany Valdespin's two-run homer gave the Mets a 3-1 lead in the third, and they stretched it to 6-1 in the fourth when Josh Satin drove in two runs with the first of his two doubles.

Bryce Harper had two singles for the Nationals in a game that was delayed 66 minutes by rain. Anthony Rendon gave Washington a 2-1 lead with a two-run homer in the fifth.
Nationals starter Jordan Zimmermann went three innings, allowing one run on two hits. Miami's Henderson Alvarez threw two shutout innings, giving up one hit and striking out two.
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) -- Cy Young Award winners Roy Halladay and Justin Verlander made their spring training debuts Sunday as the Philadelphia Phillies and Detroit Tigers tied 5-5 in 10 innings.
Both aces allowed a run and struck out two in two innings.
Victor Martinez had a big day at the plate for the Tigers, going 3 for 3 with a home run off Halladay. Martinez, who batted .330 with 102 RBIs for Detroit in 2011, missed last season with a left knee injury. He is batting .571 this spring.
Ryan Howard had two doubles and an RBI for the Phillies, who tied the score in the eighth on a homer by Domonic Brown.
AL MVP and Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera went 0 for 3, dropping his spring average to .111.
FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) -- Joe Mauer was impressed with the Twins pitching staff Sunday despite Minnesota's 10-7 loss in 10 innings to the Tampa Bay Rays.
In his first spring training appearance, Mauer caught Kyle Gibson, a 2009 first-round draft pick out of the University of Missouri hoping to make the Twins' rotation coming off Tommy John elbow-reconstruction surgery.
Gibson struck out two and gave up one hit in two innings.
Mauer went 0 for 2 with a walk. He is scheduled to leave camp after this week to play catcher for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic.
Rays reliever Juan Sandoval, attempting to pitch in the big leagues with one eye because of a hunting accident in 2006, gave up one run and two hits in one inning. He struck out one.
