Gophers overwhelmed in 5-1 loss to Penn State
A week after extending their unbeaten streak to four games, the Minnesota Gophers couldn't keep up with high-flying Penn State.
The Nittany Lions overwhelmed the Gophers, racking up 61 shots on goal and dealing Minnesota a 5-1 loss at Pegula Ice Arena. Sophomore goaltender Mat Robson made a whopping 45 saves in the first 40 minutes, finishing with 55 saves before being pulled in favor of junior Eric Schierhorn midway through the third period.
Minnesota struggled to keep pace, registering just 15 shots on goal.
James Robinson opened the scoring for Penn State at 8:13 of the first period, but the Gophers answered thanks to freshman Casey Mittelstadt, who scored his ninth goal of the season just over four minutes later.
It was the last time the Gophers would successfully respond.
Penn State's Trevor Hamilton scored at 10:31 of the second period, before Liam Folkes, Evan Barratt and Alex Limoges scored in the third.
It was another impressive performance by one of the nation's top scoring units. The Nittany Lions entered the weekend leading the nation at 40.22 shots on goal per game, and rank fifth at 3.56 goals per game.
