BEMIDJI -- Minnesota's men's hockey squad won going away Friday night, thanks to a strong, final-period flourish. On Saturday night, the Gophers got down to business earlier.
Minnesota (4-0-0) made relatively quick work of host Bemidji State Saturday, winning 5-1 at the Sanford Center. Sam Warning led the way for the Gophers, as he tallied a pair of goals.
"We got good contribution from our whole team," said Minnesota coach Don Lucia afterward. "It was a good team win.
"I thought we got better as the game went on," Lucia added. "We started to make more plays up the rink."
The host Beavers (0-3-1), which feature nine Minnesota natives on their roster, actually dented the scoreboard first Saturday, off a goal from Jeff Jubinville early in the opening period. But Minnesota largely controlled play from there on out.
The Gophers' initial big goal came courtesy of youngster Taylor Cammarata, who put Minnesota ahead, 2-1, with a goal at 11:40 of the second period.
Warning helped hand the Gophers a decisive, 3-1 advantage with 6:22 left in the second period, when he knocked home his fifth goal of the season. Minnesota's Mike Reilly ended any remaining suspense in the game when he fired home a laser from out deep roughly five minutes into the third period, giving the Gophers a 4-1 lead.
Justin Kloos also added a late goal for Minnesota, capping his three-point night. Finally, the Gophers also got 24 saves from netminder Adam Wilcox, who is 6-0 in his young career against Bemidji State.
"It's a great start for us," said Reilly. "We're getting contributions from each line; If we keep doing that, I think we're going to come out on top like we did this weekend."
Said Wilcox: "It was a good series. ... We've got a lot of scoring depth, especially with the freshmen this year -- it's really exciting to see. It's nice to be on the upswing."
The Gophers return to action next Friday at 7 p.m., when they host Boston College at Mariucci Arena. The Beavers also return to action at the same time next Friday, at Alabama-Huntsville.
