Gophers earn team win in opener against Spartans

The Minnesota Golden Gophers men's hockey team won, 4-2, in Friday's weekend opener against the Michigan State Spartans in East Lansing, Mich. The Spartans' J.T. Stenglein lit the lamp first, but the Justin Kloos responded before the first intermission and Minnesota (8-5-2 overall, 2-1-0-0 Big Ten) would not trail Michigan State (4-7-1, 0-1-0-0) again.
The Gophers' Tyler Sheehy and Vinni Lettieri and the Spartans' Taro Hirose scored in the second period, and Darian Romanko tallied his first career goal in the third to seal Minnesota's win.
Sheehy and Lettieri's goals extended career-long point streaks of seven and five games, respectively. Minnesota set a season high with 44 shots on goal and a corresponding season low with 14 shots on goal allowed.
The teams face off again Saturday night at 7 p.m. CT for the weekend finale.
We'd say the timing on airing Justin Kloos' stats for @GopherHockey worked out well. ?
