Gibb, Patterson win St. Pete Grand Slam title

ST. PETERBSURG, Fla. (AP) Americans Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson won the $800,000 St. Pete Grand Slam on Saturday, rallying for a 16-21, 23-21, 15-13 victory over Reinder Nummerdor and Christiaan Varenhorst of the Netherlands in the final of the international qualifying tournament for the 2016 Rio Games.

Gibb and Patterson won each of their seven matches on the way to their first FIVB World Tour title in more than two years. It was the 29th career victory worldwide for Gibb, and No. 15 for Patterson.

Nick Lucena and Theo Brunner of the U.S. beat Austrians Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst 21-19, 21-16 for the bronze medal.

The tournament was the first Olympic qualifier in the U.S. for the Rio Games.
