The SEC officials at Georgia-Vanderbilt drew the ire of social-media nation on Saturday, after upholding a "targeting" penalty against Bulldogs defensive end Ray Drew in the first half.
On the disputed play, the 6-foot-5, 276-pound Drew burst through the middle in his pursuit of Vandy's Austy Carta-Samuels (6-foot-1), shoving him to the ground — arms extended (no shoulder or head) — just milliseconds after the Commodores quarterback released a pass.
Even with an official on the spot, Drew was still flagged with a unnecessary roughness penalty ... and then subsequently ejected from the remainder of the game — as a consequence of the new targeting rules.
