Gentry eyeing starting center spot for Rangers

ARLINGTON, Texas – The Texas Rangers honored Craig Gentry Thursday night with the team's rookie of the year award for the 2011 season.
Gentry is hoping his 2012 season includes a starting job in centerfield.
"I want to be an everyday player and that's what I'm striving for," Gentry said. "Hopefully I have a good spring training and I can get it. I'm definitely excited. I'm trying to stay relaxed and not put too much pressure on myself and just go out there and do what I know how to do."
The field for the job is center is grounded. Texas could decide to shift Josh Hamilton back to center from left, but would prefer him in a corner outfield spot. That leaves Gentry, Julio Borbon and Leonys Martin as the three frontrunners for playing time in center.
Gentry certainly helped his cause last year. In 64 games, Gentry hit .271 and stole 18 bases. He made 38 starts, with 30 coming against left-handed pitchers. In his eight starts against right-handers, he did hit .282.
"Last year was awesome," said Gentry, who played winter ball in the Dominican Republic but was slowed by a groin strain. "It built a lot of confidence for me. It helped me get my feet up here in relax. Knowing I can compete at that level did wonders for my confidence."
