Garrett Richards has torn patella tendon in left knee, out 6-9 months
Angels pitcher Garrett Richards suffered a torn patella tendon in his left knee during Wednesday night's win over Boston, the team announced on Thursday.
Richards is expected to miss 6-9 months and was placed on the 60-day DL by the Angels.
"Garrett's taking this hard," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said after Wednesday's game. ''This is a huge blow for him.''
Richards was hurt while covering first base during the second inning and was taken off the field in a stretcher.
His injury is the second season-ending ailment for an Angels pitcher this month after Tyler Skaggs' Tommy John surgery last week.
Richards has been one of the Angels' best pitchers this season, going 13-4 with 164 strikeouts.
"I had a chance to talk to him," Angels pitcher Jered Weaver said on Wednesday. "He just wanted to know what the story was. He wasn't feeling too much pain when he was on the table. When the doctor came in and told him that he might have done something to his patellar tendon and there might be surgery involved, he kind of lost it."
Richards' injury leaves gaping hole in Angels' rotation.
