Gamel undergoes successful knee surgery

After tearing his ACL chasing a foul ball May 1 in San Diego, likely ending his season, Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Mat Gamel underwent successful surgery on his right knee Tuesday morning, according to a tweet from the team.

Brewers team doctor William Raasch performed the procedure.

A few days ago, Gamel, 26, expressed his eagerness to have the surgery as he waited for the swelling in his knee to subside. On Monday night, the night before the procedure, Gamel tweeted that he was "ready to start moving forward."

Gamel's surgery is the second successful procedure done on a torn ACL, as shortstop Alex Gonzalez tore his soon after Gamel, sliding awkwardly into second base. In 21 games this year, Gamel was batting .246 with one home run and six RBI.
