Gabriel Charles wins $400,000 Eddie Read Stakes at Del Mar

DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) Gabriel Charles won the $400,000 Eddie Read Stakes by 3 3/4 lengths Saturday at Del Mar, ending a three-race skid.
Ridden by Hall of Famer Mike Smith, Gabriel Charles ran 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.13 on a yielding turf course that was softened by a rare rainstorm. He paid $11.40, $6 and $3.40.
Twentytwentyvision returned $8.20 and $4.20. Finnegans Wake was another 1 1/2 lengths back in third and paid $3 to show as the 2-1 second choice in the Grade 1 race.
It was the second stakes win this week for Smith and trainer Jeff Mullins, who teamed to win the $100,000 Oceanside Stakes with Soul Driver on opening day Thursday.
Gabriel Charles had been idle from November 2013 until April while recovering from a bowed tendon.
Midnight Storm, the 6-5 favorite, finished sixth.
The victory, worth $240,000, increased Gabriel Charles' career earnings to $584,400, with four wins in 11 starts.
In the $88,480 Osunitas Stakes, even-money favorite Gas Total defeated My Monet by a neck.
Ridden by Flavien Prat, Gas Total ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:46.68 and paid $4.20, $2.80 and $2.40 for her fifth win in 28 career starts.
My Monet returned $5 and $2.80, while Theatre Star was another two lengths back in third and paid $3.40 to win.
The race was taken off the turf course because of the rain, resulting in nine scratches.
