Florida State backup quarterback Jacob Coker has been released from his scholarship and will transfer.
One possible destination is Alabama, according to media reports.
Coker, a native of Mobile, Ala., was competing with Jameis Winston in the spring and summer for the Seminoles' starting quarterback job. Winston won the battle and went on to win the Heisman Trophy as he led Florida State to a 14-0 mark.
A redshirt sophomore in 2013, Coker completed 18 of 36 passes for 250 yards and an interception in eight games. He suffered a knee injury in the second half of Florida State's win at Wake Forest on Nov. 9 and missed the rest of the season.
Sean Maguire was elevated to No. 2 and began taking more snaps in practice for the Seminoles, and he completed 13 of 21 passes for 116 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Coker's transfer has been widely speculated since Winston is just a redshirt sophomore in 2014. And if Coker is able to earn his bachelor's degree by April or May, he can then transfer to any school without losing a year of eligibility.
That would mean Coker could play two seasons at the Football Bowl Subdivision level.
Al.com reported that Alabama coach Nick Saban met with Coker on Tuesday and that the quarterback could make an official visit to the school. The Crimson Tide are looking to replace quarterback A.J. McCarron, who ironically was a high school teammate of Coker's at Mobile's St. Paul's Episcopal School.
