My first real year of covering Florida Gator football was 1979. The Gators went 0-10-1 under first year coach Charlie Pell, and while fans were not the least bit happy with the result, there was optimism about what Pell and the Gators might do in the future. The frustrations the fans felt about a rather inept football team were tempered by confidence that Pell was the right man for the job and things would get better.
