Freeway Series: News and notes from Game 3

Dodgers lost when...

Starter Chris Capuano allowed Mark Trumbo to hit his 12th “Trumbomb” of the season. It was a two-run shot to left field that broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning. Trumbo later had a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Mike Trout. He was 1-2 with a walk and three RBIs on the night.

Angels won when...

Jered Weaver did his job as an ace and stopped the bleeding. The Halos dropped the first two games of this series at Dodger Stadium before Weaver returned to make his first start in 52 days. He was perfect through four innings.

The Dodgers were able to get one run off of him in the top of the fifth but nothing more. Weaver (1-1) went six innings, struck out seven and walked none to pick up his first win of the season.

Not so fast

Early Wednesday, Hanley Ramirez tweeted he’d be in Bakersfield tomorrow. After going through a pregame workout at Angel Stadium, he tweeted everything is fine but his rehab assignment in Bakersfield was pushed back to Friday.

Ramirez will likely need four rehab outings, according to Dodgers manager Don Mattingly. Ramirez injured his thumb in the championship game of the World Baseball Classic and started the season on the disabled list.

He played in just four games before injuring his hamstring in San Francisco causing a return to the DL.

Kemp

Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp left the game in the bottom of the seventh inning during a Dodgers pitching change. He was escorted off of the field by Assistant Athletic Trainer Nancy Patterson.

Kemp was also hit by a Joe Blanton pitch on the right elbow the night before.

The injury made it difficult to throw and Kemp was still in some discomfort after the game. Before Wednesday’s contest Kemp told Dodgers manager Don Mattingly that he felt better and was scheduled to do some throwing before the game.

Hold on

The Dodgers didn’t go away quietly. Trailing 4-1 heading into the top of ninth, they closed to gap to 4-3 thanks to two solo home runs off of Angels closer Ernesto Frieri –one from Adrian Gonzalez and the other from Scott Van Slyke. Frieri has now allowed five homeruns in 21 games this season. He gave up just seven in 56 games with the Angels last season.

6th sense

The Angels will go with a six-man rotation for one turn, manager Mike Scioscia announced after the game. Jason Vargas will pitch the series finale against the Dodgers on Thursday. Tommy Hanson, who was activated from the restricted list on Tuesday, will get the start on Friday. Jerome Williams will start Saturday and C.J. Wilson will take the mound on Sunday followed by Joe Blanton.

Mark Lowe designated

There had to be a move made in order for Jered Weaver to return from the disabled list. The organization decided to designate relief pitcher Mark Lowe for assignment. The move points to the young arms in the Angels bullpen becoming more productive as the season has progressed. Lowe was 1-0 with a 9.26 ERA in 11 games for the Angels this season.

Next

The Dodgers will once again have an opportunity to win the series on Thursday. Mattingly will give Ted Lilly (0-1, 4.05 ERA) the ball against Jason Vargas (4-3, 3.43 ERA).
