The Indians won their tenth one run ballgame on Sunday afternoon, and a challenge won by the Indians and Terry Francona could have kept the tying run off the board.
In the eighth inning with the Tribe up 3-2, Texas right fielder Alex Rios drew a two out walk off Bryan Shaw. With a 1-1 count on Chris Gimenez, Rios broke for second but Gimenez fouled the pitch off. On the next pitch Rios was off again, this time with Gimenez taking the pitch for a ball.
Tribe catcher Yan Gomes came up firing to second baseman Jason Kipnis covering on the play. The throw was a bit in front of the base and Kipnis caught it as Rios was sliding past.
The second-base umpire Lance Barksdale called Rios safe, but Cleveland manager Terry Francona quickly came out of the dugout to challenge the call.
The play was reviewed with replay confirming that Kipnis caught the ball and tagged Rios on the back foot just before his front foot touched the base. Rios was called out and the inning ended with Gimenez still at-bat.
Had Rios been safe, he would have been the tying run in scoring position.
"It's gone against us probably more than it's gone for us," Francona said, "but it's there for a reason. We know it's close. Sometimes you worry about it being enough to get it overturned -- that's probably the biggest thing."
With the win, the Indians moved over .500 for the first time since April 9th when they split a double-header against the Padres.
