FOX Sports North Midweek Stock Report for Jan. 27

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 12:22 p.m. ET

Every Wednesday, FOX Sports North takes a look at which athletes' stock is trending up and whose is trending down.

In other words, who is trending way up, like St. Cloud State forward Joey Benik, and whose stock is way down, like the Gophers men's basketball team.

With that in mind, let's "take stock" of the current sports scene in Minnesota.

Joey Benik, St. Cloud State forward

Benik paced the Huskies in an explosive sweep of NCHC foe Western Michigan, racking up seven points on the weekend. The senior forward was named the NCAA's First Star of the Week for his big series, as SCSU won 8-2 and 7-3 over Western Michigan.

Kelly Pannek, Gophers forward

A sophomore from Plymouth, Minn., Pannek got the Gophers women's hockey team rolling with a goal in the first period on Saturday and never looked back, racking up three goals on the weekend to lead Minnesota to a 3-1, 9-0 sweep of Ohio State.

Lindsey Vonn, professional skier

The downhill superstar now has 37 World Cup wins overall after taking the World Cup super-G on Sunday, breaking legendary Austrian Annemarie Moser-Proell's record for career downhill wins in the sport's biggest event.

Harrison Smith, Vikings safety

After being passed over last season Harrison Smith is finally headed to the Pro Bowl after logging 49 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble during the 2015 season. The Vikings safety will start in Hawaii after Seahawks defender Earl Thomas opted out with an injury, becoming the first Minnesota defensive back to play in the Pro Bowl since Antoine Winfield in 2010.

Gophers men's basketball

The Gophers stretched their losing streak to nine games with losses to Michigan and Illinois, and have now won just three of their last 15 games. Their last victory, a 70-52 win over Chicago State, came on Dec. 16.

Thomas Vanek, Wild left wing

The Minnesota Wild's offense has looked better over the last few games, but Vanek hasn't been much of a factor in the group's semi-revival. Vanek has just one assist and a minus-3 rating in the Wild's last four games, including losses to Anaheim, San Jose and Arizona, as well as a win over Los Angeles.

Adreian Payne, Timberwolves forward

The second-year forward is headed to the D-League for a stint with the Erie BayHawks after averaging just 2.7 points and 2.0 rebounds on 9.5 minutes played through 30 games this season.
